As we welcome the month of November, and all it brings with it — crisp autumn air, holiday joy, and a heart of gratitude — we are reminded to reflect on how we can love our neighbors.
One of the simplest ways to love your neighbor is through meeting a need they have.
As the passage in Acts 2 describes, the early Christians enjoyed meals together, and in their fullness of joy, they gave so no one would be without. Similarly, many of us will soon enjoy holiday meals with friends and family, and in our fullness, we can feel moved to give. It is a universal phenomenon that we feel gladness when we give and help meet the needs of those who have less than ourselves.
So you might be wondering how you can give?
Sometimes it is overwhelming to know where to start. There are people all across the world that are in need, especially during this time with COVID-19 still prevalent and exacerbating existing problems within communities. Some of these communities will be local to you, and some will be in distant countries that you are unfamiliar with. Whichever needs you want to meet, here are some simple ways to get started:
Donate/Volunteer at your local food pantry
If you are a member of a church, you may ask your pastor or fellow congregants about local food pantries they recommend working with. If not, you can always do a quick search and call to start the volunteer/donation process.
Support local and international organizations:
Organizations, like Connect Global, need your support to continue to meet the needs of others, in places you might not be able to reach on your own. By donating monetarily or through resources, you will be a part of an expansive effort to make lives better across the globe.
Get involved in your community
You can do this in many different ways. To name a few; you might be the kind of person to go out and meet people and fulfill their needs directly. Or, you are an informed voter for your local community, voting in policies that benefit those in need. Lastly, you could network by connecting people in need to those who have the means to help them.
Each of these are excellent ways to get started in cheerfully giving. If you have the means to give — time, money, or resources — consider paying it forward during this season of thanksgiving.
